This month I’m highlighting skin care products from CeraVe, a most-excellent drugstore brand. Είναι ένα Cerave Jamboree! This week’s allstar is a bomb balm for soothing cracked, dry skin — CeraVe Healing Ointment.

When I put this on, my skin goes ahhhh!

If your skin ever gets so dry that it cracks and stings — which is what happens to me on the corners of my lips and around my nostrils on occasion — this balm is the product you never knew you needed.

CeraVe Healing Ointment is a thick, non-greasy unscented balm made to soothe, moisturize and ease chapped, chafed or cracked skin. It contains hyaluronic acid and CeraVe’s signature ceramides for hydration, along with petrolatum, an occlusive ingredient that locks in moisture.

You may have heard about petrolatum — which is frequently found in lotions and creams because of its ability to seal in moisture — as it’s been negatively viewed in some skin care circles, but according to some dermatologists, the bad rap is unwarranted. This particular product works for me, and my skin loves it, especially now that 1) it’s winter, and 2) I’ve been riding the retinol train every night. C’mon ride the train…the retinol train. WOO WOO!

I apply it on dry, cracked spots throughout the day whenever I need it, and all over different parts of my body as needed — lips, heels, on minor paper cuts (why do I get so many?), cuticles and all over my hands. The moment I rub it in, my skin physically feels better. The stinging stops, as does any itching or tightness. In a day or so, things are back to normal again.

Seriously, I couldn’t wait to rub this into my hands, LOL!

Yay για τον κόλπο! In this series, for the month of February 2019, I’ll be featuring products from and around my stomping grounds, the San Francisco Bay Area.

A trifle of trivia for my friends who marvel at makeup minutia: drugstore brand E.L.F. was founded in Oakland, California, in 2004. as opposed to popular myth, their name stands for “Eyes Lips Face,” and not for the classic Christmas film starring will Farrell (which I’ve seen about a million times!).

ΞΩΤΙΚΟ. is low-key well-known for doing a full range of very affordable drugstore makeup — color, tools, skincare, the whole nine yards — with plenty of products to choose from under $10. Whenever I have a charm itch that needs scratching but don’t want to start a raging bonfire in my wallet, I’ll go to Ulta or Target and get a few $2 doohickeys in the E.L.F. section for some instant gratification.

Granted, it doesn’t always work out for me, because I’m pickier about textures and finishes now that I’m in my 40s than I was in my 20s and 30s (a.k.a. the age when I could throw any shimmery shadow with the consistency of almond meal on my lids and be just fine), but in some cases I’ll find something great! Sure, it might not be the most ideal product in the history of the world, but it also won’t require me to take out a loan.

What happens when you “smize” and pop your hip in front of your garage… BTW, I’m wearing the E.L.F. shadow Brow and liner palette and the No Budge Retractable liner on my eyes.
Like their $12 matte powder eye palette with cool-toned mattes (YES!), which you can use to fill in your brows, shade your lids and line your eyes.

Let me say that again: COOL-TONED MATTES. As in *no* orange or red shades. What a gem! I can do pretty much an entire eye look from start to finish with this palette (just add a tightline and mascara), and it works with practically every blush/lip combo around.

The caveat? Nil wear time…so I absolutely have to use it with an eye primer. If I don’t, the shadow vanishes in less than two hours.

Even with primer, it fades much more and faster than higher-end shadows. but still…it’s $12! For that price, I’ll take it. I’m pleased enough with the colors, the blending and the texture of the powders (similar to urban Decay).

I made an E.L.F. run last week because I needed a pick-me-up after going to the dentist, so I got…

A $3 No Budge Retractable eyeliner in Black: Long-wearing and decently pigmented (although not as pigmented as the Maybelline twist-up, so I have to use two or three layers). It’s stiff, but it’s good enough for tightlining.

A $2 pack of Line & define Tape: This stuff is juuuust sticky enough. You can even cut them in half to make a pack last longer.

A $4 solid brush & Sponge Cleanser: pretty great.

An entire haul for less than $10!? how is that even possible!?

Μόλις πίστευες ότι δεν θα μπορούσε να πάρει κανένα είδος θερμότητας … ha ha!

One balm to guideline them all!

I’ve tried my fair share of lip balms that claim to hydrate, heal and safeguard incredibly chapped lips, including some cult favourites:

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream (stinky)

RoC Enydrial Repairing lip care (weird silicone-y consistency)

Aquaphor by Eucerin (was my 2nd preferred before C.O. Bigelow came along)

Nip + fab Lip + Nip fix [pure lanolin – yup it’s nipple balm] (goopy)

Lucas’ Pawpaw Ointment [an Australian cult product] (slimy)

Jack Black intense therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 (not moisturizing enough)

Nuxe Rêve de miel lip balm (waxy)

Qtica intense Overnight Lip repair Balm not shown (this was my preferred overnight lip balm before I found the C.O. Bigelow supreme 2X, its only downfall was how difficult it was to squeeze out of the tube, I finally busted the tube when I squeeze too hard one too numerous times)

But none of them measured up to C.O. Bigelow supreme 2X Lip Balm for me.  I own 3 out of the 4 available flavours:

C.O. Bigelow Vanillamint supreme 2X Lip Shine No. 505
C.O. Bigelow Spearmint supreme 2X Lip Shine No. 506
C.O. Bigelow Cinnamint supreme 2X Lip Shine No. 504

What makes them so great?  Let me list:

hydrating (contains shea butter, sunflower seed oil)

long long lasting (stays put all night)

smells and tastes delightful (my preferred is Vanillamint)

readily available (Bath & Body Works)

inexpensive ($8 for 14g and typically there’s a purchase 2 get 1 totally free offer)

All the flavours are clear, with a thick balm (but not goopy or sticky) consistency.   A small amount of the lip balm is all that is needed.  There’s a bit of a tingle from the mint leaf oil but not irritating to the lips (and truth be told, I’m not typically a big fan of strong minty lip products).  It dispenses through a slanted applicator – I apply straight from the tube to my lips with no mess. I’m trying to think of something I don’t like about this product and I just can’t!

I’m still hunting for the elusive Mentha No. 503 flavour which seems to not be available in Canada.   In a pinch, the C.O. Bigelow My favorite night Balm No. 306 is a suitable substitute but it’s not as long long lasting or as hydrating as the supreme 2X formula in my experience.  C.O. Bigelow supreme 2X Lip Balm is available at bath & Body works but make sure it’s the supreme 2X formula, they also carry the Mentha Lip shine formula which isn’t nearly as good (runnier consistency, not as hydrating – much more suitable for day time).

Let me know what your preferred night time lip balm is. and if it’s not C.O. Bigelow supreme 2X Lip Shine, then may I suggest that you give it a try!
